August 22 - Proverbs 15:4

August 22 - Proverbs 15:4

"The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit."

In our kitchens, we often find solace in a refreshing drink. A sip of cool water on a hot day, a warm cup of tea in the evening, or a soothing cup of cocoa at night, all these simple things can uplift our spirits and soothe our bodies. Our words, much like these soothing drinks, can either refresh and nourish those around us or leave a bitter aftertaste.

Proverbs 15:4 provides a vivid image of the power of our words: "The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit." Like a tree, our words can offer shelter, nourishment, and life, or they can be a source of harm, causing damage and crushing spirits.

Our kitchens are often the heart of our homes, a place where we gather to share meals, conversations, and memories. As we go about our tasks in the kitchen, let's be mindful of the words we use. Are our words serving like a cooling drink, refreshing and uplifting those who hear them? Or are they harsh and hurtful, causing emotional distress and turmoil?

Just as we are careful about the ingredients we use in our food, we should be mindful of the words we use when we speak. Let us make it our aim to use our words to build up and not tear down, to inspire and not discourage, to bring comfort and not pain.

The book of Proverbs repeatedly emphasizes the importance of our speech. Our words are powerful tools that can be used for good or evil. We can use our tongues to spread wisdom, truth, and love, or we can use them to spread falsehood, discord, and pain.

As we stir our pots and knead our dough in the kitchen, let's stir kindness into our conversations and knead gentleness into our interactions. Let us use our tongues to spread life, just as a tree spreads its branches to provide shade and fruit.

We all know the feeling of relief that comes from a soothing drink after a long day. In the same way, let us strive to be a source of relief and comfort to those around us through our words. Let our speech be like a refreshing drink, uplifting and nourishing the spirits of those who hear it.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Reflect on your conversations over the past week. Were your words more like a soothing drink or a bitter brew? How can you make your words more soothing and life-giving?
  2. How can you cultivate the habit of speaking words of kindness and gentleness in your kitchen, even amidst the pressures and frustrations that can come with preparing meals?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, may we use our tongues to spread Your love and grace, just like a soothing drink refreshes our body. Give us the wisdom to speak words that heal and uplift, not words that wound and crush the spirit. Help us to remember the power of our words and use them wisely. Amen.
