October 4 – The Slow Simmer of Wisdom

October 4 – The Slow Simmer of Wisdom

James 1:19-20 - "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires."

Anyone who has ever cooked knows the magic of a slow simmer. It is in this gentle cooking process that flavors meld and enhance each other, producing a depth and richness unmatched by hastened cooking. Our reactions and responses in life can be thought of in a similar vein.

In a world where snap judgments and hasty replies are the norm, God's word reminds us of the value of a tempered response. When we’re quick to listen, slow to speak, and even slower to anger, our responses become more considered, wise, and compassionate. Instead of a rash, bitter reaction, we offer one that's seasoned with understanding and love.

Reflection Questions

  1. Can you recall a recent situation where a hasty reaction led to regret?
  2. How can you train yourself to be "slow to speak and slow to become angry" in the future?

Morning Prayer:

God, grant me the wisdom to listen intently, speak cautiously, and react with love and understanding. May my responses be a reflection of Your grace. Amen.
